Recomended run from Hard Disc. Will run on Acorn A300 to RiscPC with OS3 or later.
This software is not free, it is an unregistered copy of !Arctic, copywrite Richard Proctor.
It automates the process of getting Compuserve to work and allows you to access many millions of people around the world, send messages, files etc.
You log on, download information and log off to read your infprmation and next time you log on it gets information you want, sees whats new in the areas you specify and logs off so it saves lots of connect time.
When you use it it will run but pop up registration windows every so often when you want to do something interesting!! To register follow the details and a basic program will be sent to you from Richard by e-mail to upgrade the "Params" file in the application. As the program evolves you can download new versions from UKComp section 8 (Acorn) where you will find all sorts of Acorn owners.
Please register to motivate Richard to write more!!
To get started
**************************
You will need....
!Arctic software(on this disc).
1) A modem (9600 and faster is best- SupraFax are good and cheap) and a modem lead, either Arc or PC.
(please note Compuserve are committed to providing worldwide 28K communication by April 96 so buy the best you can afford but at the moment many sites have 9600!!)
2) Compuserve details. To get these have a credit card handy and phone 0800 289378 in the UK or +44 117 976 0681 abroad. It will cost about £7 a month plus phone use but you do get a magazine as well!!
Then..
Create a diectory called Compuserve on your hard disc.
Run sparkplug on this disc and drag the "Sarctic" directory with the zig-zag onto its icon on the bar.
You can then drag the !Arctic file in the window that opens, into the Compuserve directory on Hard Disc
Reset the computer and run !Arctic which will ask for details of your user name - mines "Ned Abell (UK)", your CIS number and password and then it creates an internal file called Params with those details.
Now when the Artcic window opens click on Params and you can set to which city you log on. Note the new +1 phone numbers.
If the modem is connected you can then log on. Later you can log on to a different centre if required. When you join Forums you will create directories (like Mail) in the Compuserve directory showing your messages read, files downloaded etc. After a while you must log on again and change your password so that no one knows it.
If you have problems there is lots of help with the software or send a message to Richard (his e-address is in the software), you can also get a printed manual.
I've started your address file off with a few names to get going.
If you have problems getting to the online stage ring me on 01299-832249 or on line e-mail me with a short message - easy - hard - confusing??
Welcome aboard
(Please note your internet e-mail address should be quoted as mine below - note also the full stop and not a comma between the numbers)
